Sneakbox Decoys are each made and painted one at a time by Maine master craftsman, Jim Higgins who has been making decoys since 1974. Heads are carved from Maine white cedar and then attached to bodies carved from high density, tan, decoy cork. Pine is used for tail reinforcement inserts and for the keel. Each assembled decoy is sealed with spar varnish and then weighted for balance by test floating in a tank of water. Painting is done with acrylic paints and then an oil based matte finish is applied to protect the painting details. All work is by hand. Prices range from $65 for blackduck decoys in the “Gunning Grade” to $110-135 for “Premium Grade” of all other species- this work is “custom work” and is of the highest grade, as in the attached pictures.
Jim Higgins made his first decoys in 1974 and has been making and selling decoys for over 20 years, first through a Maine mail order company and more recently through the website www.sneakboxdecoy.com Although he does not compete with his decoys on a regular basis, he has been awarded first place in many shows from the Ward World Championship in Ocean City, MD to the Ohio Decoy Carvers and Collectors contest this past April where he won “Best of Divers” with the golden eye drake pictured below. He is an avid duck hunter and fly fisherman.
